It isn't just about the distance.

More Than Just a Medal: The Emotional Magic of the Joburg North City Marathon

There is a specific kind of silence that exists at 6:00 AM at Marks Park Sports Club in Emmarentia. It’s the sound of thousands of people shivering in the Highveld morning air, the rhythmic stretching of hamstrings, and the quiet nervous energy of athletes preparing to face a challenge.

I recently attended the Joburg North City Marathon. While the “big dogs” were lining up for the full 42.2km Two Oceans qualifier, I was there for the 10km. Some might say it’s “just” a 10km, but as I stood among the sea of runners, I realized that there is no such thing as “just” any distance when it comes to the spirit of the running community.

By the time I crossed the finish line, I wasn’t just breathless; I was emotional. Here is why events like the North City Marathon are the heartbeat of South African running.

The Event: A Jewel in Joburg’s Running Calendar

Hosted by Run Zone AC, the Joburg North City Marathon has quickly become a “must-do” event. Starting and ending at the iconic Marks Park, the route takes you through some of the most beautiful, leafy suburbs of northern Johannesburg.

The event offers something for every level of fitness:

  • The 42.2km & 21.1km: Serious tests of endurance and official qualifiers for the Comrades and Two Oceans marathons.

  • The 10km: A fast, scenic route that attracts a mix of speedsters and social runners.

  • The 5km: A vibrant “fun run” that brings out families, walkers, and beginners.

From a technical standpoint, the race is flawlessly organized. With water points every 3km (shoutout to the volunteers serving everything from Coca-Cola to those life-saving salted potatoes!), the support on the road is world-class. But the logistics aren’t what made me tear up at the 8km mark. It was the humanity.

The Power of "The Collective Hard"

There is something deeply moving about thousands of strangers getting together to do something difficult. In a world that often feels divided, a race starting line is a great equalizer.

Standing there, I looked around and saw the full spectrum of our country. I saw elite athletes with zero percent body fat focused on the win. I saw “Benchwarmers” like us, nervous but determined. I saw people running in memory of lost loved ones, and others running to celebrate a health battle they had won.

When the starting gun goes off, all those individual stories merge into one collective heartbeat. You aren’t just running your own race; you are being carried by the energy of the person next to you. When you hit a hill and your lungs start to burn, you look to your left and see a stranger digging just as deep as you are. You share a nod, a grimace, or a quick “keep going,” and suddenly, the hill feels a little flatter.

Why It Gets Emotional

I’ll admit it: I got emotional.

It happens around the 7km or 8km mark for most 10km runners. That’s the point where the initial adrenaline has worn off and the “work” begins. You see the spectators on the side of the road—complete strangers—cheering your name (if it’s on your bib) or just shouting, “Looking good, runner!”

It makes you realize that running is a metaphor for life. We all have our own distances to cover, and we all face our own “hills.” But for those two hours on a Sunday morning in Joburg, we aren’t alone. We are part of a tribe. Crossing that finish line and having a volunteer hang a medal around your neck is a validation of your effort, but also a celebration of the human spirit.

What the North City Marathon Offers

If you haven’t done this race before, put it on your 2027 calendar. Here is why:

  1. The Atmosphere: The race village at Marks Park is electric. With music, food vendors, and a sea of club gazebos, the “after-party” is as good as the race.

  2. The Route: It’s challenging but fair. You get to experience the best of Joburg’s “green lung” areas.

  3. The Community: You will see every major club represented, but you’ll also see the “unattached” runners finding their feet.

Final Thoughts: Get Off the Bench

If you’ve been sitting on the fence about entering your first 10km, let the Joburg North City Marathon be your sign. Don’t worry about your time. Don’t worry about where you finish.

Come for the medal, but stay for the feeling. There is nothing quite like the realization that you are capable of doing hard things, and there is no better place to realize it than in the middle of a Johannesburg road, surrounded by five thousand of your newest friends.

See you at the next starting line.
